One of my favorite subjects to photograph is horses—especially when my daughter Mia is riding. This black and white photo taken at T&Nay Ranch on sweet Jack is one of my favorites. I entered it into our local library’s Spirit of America photo contest and won.

I was tempted to enter a photo that included the American flag, but in the end decided that the image of a woman on horseback was a more subtle nod to the theme of Americana.
